A new low, even for cyberbullies

My Big Fat Nose and I thought we had seen it all when it comes to bullying and name-calling. Nope.

Elkhorn, Nebraska Tornado- April 26, 2024

The lowest of low bullies have surfaced with their cruel comments and victim shaming on social media.

Who is the group these bullies are targeting? Tornado victims who have lost their homes. That’s right. They are picking on and showing zero compassion for victims who have lost their homes, belongings, memories, photos, a roof, everything. The recent devastation the tornadoes ravaged in my home state of Nebraska traumatized thousands of people. The damage is still being assessed from eight tornadoes in the area that had top speeds of 165 mph.

The cruel commenters are discussing the wealth of the victims, the size of their homes and how they “can afford to replace everything anything.” When it comes to natural disasters, why should it matter if it’s a mansion or a mobile home that is leveled? It’s still a home to a person, to a family. It’s still a place that was filled with memories, keepsakes, family heirlooms, belongings that were hard-earned, despite a person’s salary.  Loss is loss. Grief is grief. Digging through piles of rubble hoping to find something of your own has the same feeling no matter what mortgage the person pays every month.

I hope these bullies never know what it’s like to have everything in your life lost in a matter of seconds.

If they do, I can guarantee you, strangers will come to their aid and offer kindness, unlike they are doing now as my fellow Nebraskans pick up the pieces of their lives.
